Boston teachers voted to support a proposal that would add 40 minutes to the school day for about 50 of Boston’s elementary, middle, and K-8 schools.

Wednesday’s vote comes a few weeks after Mayor Marty Walsh, Boston Public Schools, and Boston Teacher’s Union negotiated the proposal, which is expected to impact 23,000 students when it rolls out over the next three years.

The school day extension will cost $12.5 million annually, according to The Boston Globe, and teacher’s salaries will increase by $4,464 a year for the extra hours.

“I commend the Boston Teachers Union and Boston Public Schools on reaching an agreement,’’ Mayor Marty Walsh said in a statement. “This is an example of successful collaboration efforts, and our young people will now have more time to learn.’’

The School Committee must also support the proposal for the longer day to take effect.
