Dropkick Murphys Will Play at Charlie Baker’s Event Friday, Because of Course They Will
Charlie Baker will celebrate his inauguration as Massachusetts governor with the crooning sounds of his favorite band, Dropkick Murphys, at a Friday event in Dorchester.
“The governor-elect has been a long-time fan of Dropkick Murphys and we were pleased that they agreed to play the concert,’’ Baker spokesperson Tim Buckley told Boston.com.
Baker, who will be inaugurated on Thursday, and Lieutenant Governor-elect Karyn Polito are holding the event as a way of thanking supporters. Attendees will be treated to Dropkick Murphys and other performances at The Strand Theater in Uphams Corner, the Dorchester Reporter first noted. The event will be “pretty informal,’’ Buckley said, without any big speeches.
Baker is, to put it mildly, a big Dropkick Murphys fan. “Charlie has probably been to at least a dozen concerts,’’ most recently in early 2014, Buckley said.
Baker has previously said Dropkick Murphys’ “Forever’’ was the theme song of his life, and he teared up when the band played “The Fields of Athenry’’ during a funeral for a Massachusetts soldier killed in Afghanistan in March 2014.
The feeling is also mutual. Dropkick Murphys lead singer Ken Casey, a Democrat, campaigned for Baker and co-hosted a fundraiser for the Republican candidate in Dorchester before last year’s election.
The Friday night event will also feature Fiddlehead Theater Company performers singing the appropriately-named “A Brand New Day’’ from the play “The Wiz.’’
