Boston Police Officer Allegedly Used Racial Slurs During Assault on Uber Driver

A veteran Boston police officer was arrested Sunday on charges he assaulted an Uber driver in South Boston.

According to a statement from the Boston Police Department, a driver for the ride-sharing service reported the he was assaulted early Sunday morning by a passenger.

According to the statement, the driver said as he was dropping a passenger off, the passenger accused the driver of attempting to drop him off in the wrong location. The driver said the passenger physically assaulted him once he stopped the vehicle.

The driver said when he exited the vehicle, the passenger got into the front seat and drove off, according to the statement

The driver was assisted by a passing motorist and the two followed the victim’s vehicle to E. 1st Street and Farragut Road where the suspect stopped and exited the victim’s car, according to the statement.

At that point, according to a police report obtained by The Boston Globe, the suspect yelled racial slurs at the man who provided help to the Uber driver then knocked the Uber driver to the ground and kept hitting him.

Officers later arrested Michael Doherty, 40 of South Boston, a 16-year veteran of the Boston Police Department, and charged him with assault and battery and using a motor vehicle without authority.

Doherty was placed on paid administrative leave. He is scheduled to be arraigned Monday in South Boston District Court.
