Chatham Officer Runs Over Man Lying in Road
A Chatham Police officer responding to an emergency call ran over a man lying in the middle of Crowell Road early Thursday morning, according to a statement by the department.
The incident happened just after 4 a.m. on New Year’s Day. According to the statement, after hitting an object on the road, the officer stopped and got out of the car to discover a human body. The officer tried to revive the man and called for medical assistance.
Police identified the victim as Garrett Gagne, 22, of Longmeadow. He was pronounced dead by doctors at Cape Cod Hospital. State Police have been called in to investigate the crash.
“It is unknown why or how the victim was lying in the roadway at that location prior to the accident. It is also unknown what the victim’s condition was just prior to the accident. The stretch of roadway on Crowell Road where the accident occurred was unlit with no street lights and no exterior lighting on the near-by buildings,’’ said police in the statement.
Police said Gagne was in town to visit friends on new Year’s Eve. Investigators are trying to contact those friends.
The name of the officer will be released by Friday, according to the statement.
“The Chatham Police Department extends our condolences to the family of Garrett Gagne during this grievous time. The department also extends our concerns to the officer involved in this
tragic accident,’’ said police in the statement.
