Salvation Army Bell Ringer Hurt After Car Crashes Into Store

Arlington Police say an 87-year-old man drove this car through a Walgreens awning, seriously injuring the Salvation Army bell ringer soliciting nearby. Arlington Police Department

A Salvation Army bell ringer soliciting donations outside of an Arlington Walgreens was seriously injured Tuesday afternoon when an 87-year-old man allegedly drove his Toyota Camry into the store’s facade.

Police say the driver may have mistaken the store’s awning and front door for a drive-through window.

The 50-year-old victim, a Boston man whose name has not been released, was pinned under the vehicle. A good Samaritan working at a nearby service station came to his rescue, however, using a floor jack to lift the car off of him.

Suffering from serious but not life-threatening injuries mostly to his right leg, the victim was transported by ambulance to an area hospital.
