Dorchester Pop Warner is Going to Nationals, and the Kids Need Your Help
The Dorchester Eagles Pop Warner squad won the New England Regional Championship, giving them the chance to go to the National Championship in Florida. But they need money for the trip.
According to The Boston Globe, the team, comprised of 33 kids, all between 8 and 10 years old, won their New England championship game last week with just seconds left.
They would need $44,000 to cover the cost of the trip. The team set up a GoFundMe website, where they were asking for donations.
That this is not the first time the Eagles had to scratch together money for a trip to nationals. This is now the 10th time the team has qualified, and money has been an issue each time.
After the team had already left, Mayor Marty Walsh announced that he had received $16,000 in pledges and commitments, according to The Dorchester Reporter.
“Keeping kids active and engaged in programs like Pop Warner is a key piece to creating a foundation for success,’’ Mayor Walsh told The Dorchester Reporter. “They’re learning the value of hard work and discipline, and their accomplishments should be recognized and encouraged. I’m proud of these young athletes, and I encourage the entire Boston community to pledge their support too.’’
The team is still looking for donations to fund their trip.
