Christo Brand, one of the men who guarded Nelson Mandela during the anti-apartheid leader’s incarceration in South Africa, will talk about that experience and more during a free program for the UMass Lowell community and public.

Brand wrote about his 12 years with Mandela in the book “Mandela: My Prisoner, My Friend.’’ The book tells the story of their enduring friendship that ran through Mandela’s political ascendancy to become South Africa’s president and lasted until his death last year.

The lecture will take place on Thursday, December 4, at 4 p.m. in the University Crossing, Moloney Hall, Second Floor, 220 Pawtucket St., Lowell.
