Ashland Water Main Break Pollutes Town’s Water

A water main break in Ashland left many of its 16,500 residents with undrinkable water last night. According to Lieutenant David Iarussi of the Ashland Fire Department, calls came in starting at 9 p.m. on Friday. Various households complained of low or no water pressure.

Ashland officials located the problem, a water main break in the wetlands, around 10 a.m. Saturday. The wetlands are near the Ashland-Framingham border, but because a main line was leaking, most Ashland households were affected.

“This kind of break has serious ramifications, inhibiting fire suppression because of the key role sprinkler systems play,’’ said Iarussi.

Residents were notified of the problem by the city’s emergency phone call system. The water department isolated the leak and repairs will be made over the next several hours.

Since locating the break, water to households has been restored. Iarussi noted that there may be some silt present, however, and, while safe for showering, residents should drink bottled water until advised otherwise.
