State Trooper Saves Owl After Cruiser Collision

A Massachusetts State Trooper saved a presumably thankful owl after it collided with his cruiser in Athol early this morning amid pre-Turkey Day travelers.

Police said via Facebook in a post titled “Not Your Thanksgiving Bird’’ (see what they did there) that Trooper Matthew Cesvette found the owl “stunned and not moving’’ beside Route 2 after it flew into the side of his police car. The trooper brought the owl back to his barracks swaddled in a blanket (aww) to have it checked for injuries.

The ruffled bird was at the Athol State Police barracks awaiting evaluation by environmental police as of this morning. The animal was being held in a plastic bin, which Massachusetts State Police noted had holes for breathing. Police said they expected the owl to be released back into the wild after its checkup.

Facebook users thanked Cesvette for saving the bird, although it may be safe to assume he won’t be pardoning his turkey dinner tomorrow.
