East Boston Man Arrested on Multiple Charges, Including Rape and Armed Robbery

Law enforcement officials believe an East Boston man arraigned Monday on multiple charges of rape and armed robbery may have been involved in a previous rape.

Boston Police first arrested Eduardo Selvan Hernandez-Ortiz, 20, for attempted rape and robbery of a woman the morning of Nov. 22 and later linked him to an earlier rape and robbery that occurred on Nov. 1, according to a statement from District Attorney Daniel F. Conley’s office.

On Saturday, police received a report about an attack in East Boston. A woman in a Meridian Street building said she was robbed and sexually assaulted by a man who followed her inside. According to police, the victim said her attacker held a knife to her throat, robbed her of the $2 she was carrying, and sexually assaulted her. The victim was able to fight her attacker off.

A little while later that night, officers spotted and arrested Hernandez-Ortiz near the same building. He was found with $2 and a knife that matched the victim’s description, according to Conley’s office.

Police said Hernandez-Ortiz fits the description of a man involved in a Nov. 1 assault that occurred on the same street, during which the attacker raped a woman and stole her cell phone, prosecutors said.

From the DA release:

“Hernandez-Ortiz allegedly made statements to police admitting to both assaults. He also identified himself in surveillance images captured in the area of the earlier assault and told officers that the victim’s cell phone could be found at his West Eagle Street apartment. Boston Police obtained a warrant to search Hernandez-Ortiz residence and recovered the stolen cell phone and clothing similar to that worn by the assailant, prosecutors.’’

Hernandez-Ortiz appeared in East Boston Municipal Court on Monday on charges of assault with intent to rape, armed robbery, indecent assault and battery of a person over 14, open and gross lewdness, receiving stolen property under $250, as well as charges of aggravated rape and armed robbery for the Nov. 1 assault. He is being held on $85,000 bail and is due in court again on Dec. 22.
