Escaped Inmate Captured in Somerville

UPDATE, Monday 8:30 p.m.: An inmate that left and went missing from a Boston halfway house on Nov. 14 has been caught, according to the Massachusetts Department of Correction.

Authorities notified the public on Sunday that Gary Smith, who was serving a sentence for unarmed robbery, had “escaped.’’

In a Facebook statement, officials said Smith was detained Monday morning:

Inmate Gary Smith was captured this morning in Somerville by the Fugitive Apprehension Unit. He will be transferred to higher security and we will be working with the district attorneys office to file charges.

Original Post: An inmate serving a three to seven year sentence for unarmed robbery left a Boston transitional housing facility Friday afternoon and is still missing.

Gary Smith left the Brooke House pre-release facility at 107 Park Drive in what the state is calling an escape, according to this Facebook statement:

Information on the fugitive was not released until today. When asked on social media why the public was not notified sooner, the corrections department offered little in response.

Great question, but whatever answer I give you might just sound like an excuse. It was shared with law enforcement immediately, that’s all I can tell you.

Community Resources For Justice, which runs the adult state facility program for male offenders at Brooke House, describes the procedures for its residents:

Our [residents] are working or searching for employment in the community. They each have an approved itinerary that requires frequent check-ins back to the program. They go out of program to work, education or vocational training, religious services, and approved appointments.

Authorities warned the public against detaining Smith and urged anyone with questions or information to call 508-473-9509, the 24 Hour Duty Station at 508-422-3481 or to leave an anonymous tip at 508-657-4302.
