Chances are, shoppers at L.L. Bean — “a trusted source for quality apparel, reliable outdoor equipment and expert advice for over 100 years’’ — like the out-of-doors. And they would probably be delighted by a display of live birds of prey, set up in honor of an L.L. Bean grand opening at the Burlington Town Center mall in Vermont.

What they may be slightly less delighted by is the sight of one of the birds attacking the other.

The Burlington Free Press reports that a European eagle owl attacked a Harris’s hawk at the display near a fireplace on the mall’s lower level, gripping it in its talons for a few minutes, causing the hawk to “shriek loudly.’’

Those manning the display eventually managed to separate the birds, and it seemed that the hawk was okay.

The birds, from Talons! A Bird of Prey Experience, have known each other for six incident-free years. Talons! has set up bird displays at store openings in the past.

Master falconer Lorrie Schumacher told The Free Press, “They’re always in close proximity, we make sure their leashes are not too close, and this time it was a matter of inches.’’

“They’re predators,’’ she added. We never doubted it.
