Coakley, Baker Cancel Events Following Menino’s Death

Gubernatorial candidates Martha Coakley and Charlie Baker have canceled public events for Thursday after the death of former Boston Mayor Thomas Menino.

Baker announced he would cancel public events for the next two days out of respect. Coakley has cleared her schedule for at least today.

Coakley issued a statement Thursday. “Today, Boston has lost the greatest mayor in its history. He was a friend and mentor, and a shining example to me and countless others of what it means to love and serve your community,’’ the statement read in part.

At a debate between the two candidates earlier this week, Baker began his closing statement by asking for thoughts and prayers for Menino. Baker’s campaign also issued a statement Thursday. “If anyone deserved a long and satisfying retirement, it would be former Boston Mayor Tom Menino,’’ the statement read.
