Former Boston Mayor Menino Stopping His Cancer Treatment
Former long-time Boston Mayor Tom Menino said he would no longer seek treatments for a cancer that spread to his liver and lymph nodes after leaving office earlier this year.
“Today, I, along with my family, after talking with my medical team, have decided to suspend my book tour as well as my cancer treatments,’’ Menino wrote in a brief statement released Thursday afternoon. “I continue to fight this terrible disease, I feel it is time for me to spend more time with my family, grandkids, and friends.’’
Menino thanked his medical team at Brigham and Women’s hospital, calling their treatment “amazing.’’
“I am hopeful and optimistic that one day the talented researchers, doctors and medical professionals in this city will find a cure for this awful disease,’’ he wrote. “Angela and I are grateful for the tremendous outpouring of support and kindness shown to our family and ask that everyone keep us in their thoughts and prayers.’’
Menino began his treatment for an “advanced cancer of unknown primary origin’’ cancer in March, his oncologist told the Globe at the time.
The city’s 53rd mayor also underwent surgeries to remove cancerous growths in 2003 and 2012.
