Psych Patient Calls in Gun Threat, Causes Methuen School Perimeter Lockdown

Three schools in Methuen were on perimeter lockdown due to an incident at the nearby Holy Family Hospital on Thursday morning.

According to Cpt. Randy Haggar at the Methuen Police Department, a psychiatric patient at the hospital obtained access to a phone and called the police to report a man with a gun in the hospital. The specificity of the patient’s report (that the man had a gun tucked into his waistband) warranted police investigation.

During this time, Superintendent Judith Scannell called for perimeter lockdown for Tenney Grammar, Timony Grammar, and Methuen High School, which all border the hospital. Scannell told Boston.com that this means business as usual inside the schools, with no one allowed in or out.

The police confirmed there was no threat.

“The whole incident was very short,’’ Haggar said.

Holy Family Hospital did not respond to requests for comment.
