Their identity was not immediately released.
Another person was hospitalized with minor injuries, while at least 30 others were displaced in the fire.
Responders reported a fire showing from 104 Winthrop St. just before 9 p.m., with a second alarm sounded at 9:07 p.m. A third alarm was sounded at approximately 9:20 p.m., with a fourth and then fifth only minutes later.
Officials said the fire was contained but “by no means under control,’’ with firefighting efforts likely to last through the night.
The building is described as a “very large duplex’’ with fire initially reported on all floors. Fire officials said there was a particularly “heavy fire’’ on the building’s top floor.
