Opening statements began Monday in the trial of Robel Phillipos, 21, a friend of Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. Phillipos is accused of lying to authorities about being in Tsarnaev’s room when two other friends removed evidence of the attack after the bombing. He had claimed to be asleep at his apartment in New Bedford, which he shared with Azamat Tazhayakov and Dias Kadyrbayev, the two other Tsarnaev friends on trial for obstruction of justice and conspiracy to obstruct justice.
