Suspect Arrested in Cub Scout Robbery

Police have arrested a man they believe stole a Cub Scout’s donation jar containing $261 from a mother and son outside a Malden Stop & Shop, police told Boston.com. Kenneth Smith, 28, was arrested by police and charged with larceny from a person.

According to Malden Police Detective Lieutenant Marc Gatcomb, the scout and his mother were collecting donations outside of the store when the suspect snatched the jar and ran away. Malden Police posted a video of the suspect, described as a white male with tattoos wearing a gray tank top.

After receiving several tips from the public, Police keyed in on Smith, announcing his arrest Monday night.

No one was injured, police said.

A witness told NECN that the fleeing suspect repeatedly said, “times are hard.’’

Gatcomb said a witness took photos of the man on her phone as he fled.

Gatcomb said donations from Stop and Shop and from shoppers enabled the scout and his mother to completely recover their losses.
