Suffolk Courthouse May Close Its Doors

The Suffolk Superior Courthouse may close down and temporarily move to Malden. WENDY MAEDA/ GLOBE

With elevators constantly breaking down and water leaking through its ceiling tiles, Suffolk Superior Courthouse, one of the largest court buildings in Massachusetts, may close down for repairs or replacement. If this happens, all criminal and civil matters may move across the county line to Malden, The Boston Globe reports. Many fear this could disrupt the state’s justice system.

It wouldn’t be the first time the 24-story courthouse, located in Government Center, shut its doors.

Ten years ago, a restoration project that cost about $40 million displaced clerks, judges, and lawyers.

The news comes after Massachusetts Trial Court officials conducted a study on the condition of 101 courthouses around the state. Many need vast repairs or replacement that could have multi-million dollar price tags.
