South Boston Daycare Evacuated Due to Construction Work Odor
The Boston Fire Department evacuated a South Boston daycare center this morning, after a foul odor was reported. Contractors working on underground sewage pipes outside caused the smell to pervade the basement-level program, officials said.
Boston Fire Department spokesman Steve MacDonald said the daycare center, located at 424 West Broadway, was evacuated at 8:11 a.m. According to their website, ABCD’s South Boston Head Start is located at that address, but MacDonald could not confirm that it was the program evacuated.
A hazardous materials team did not find any hazards in the air, and there were no reports of anyone feeling sick, he said.
MacDonald said he did not know what caused the odor, but said the contractors were using unknown chemicals on the pipes.
MacDonald couldn’t identify the contractors, but said they were actively trying to get rid of the smell. The children have been sent home for the day. He said the first floor offices located above the daycare were not evacuated.
