The fateful encounter came at 8:45 a.m. on Friday, September 5 at the Wood Island station on the Blue Line. A video released by Transit Police (seen above) shows what appears to be a white man wearing a dark striped shirt, khaki pants, sunglasses, and a blue backpack with neon green strings.[fragment number=1]

At first, the man attempts to enter the fare gate on the far left, which apparently rejects his MBTA pass. He then moves one gate over and attempts to insert the pass again. He is again rejected, and kicks the gate in frustration, causing the first round of damages.

But the worst was yet to come. After a man walks through a third fare gate at the far right, our frustrated would-be rider slips through. Not content with sneaking onto the platform without paying, he then turns around and attacks the third gate.

Of course, no fare gate deserves to be treated like this. But the particular gate the man damaged on his second round of kicks was the only one that actually helped (albeit unintentionally) the man succeed in his quest to reach the train platform, making the assault doubly cruel. Meet kindness with kindness, good sir.

If you have information on this man’s identity, contact the MBTA Transit Police at (617) 222-1050.
