What Is Scarier Than 1 Great White Shark?
Two Great White Sharks were spotted cruising through the Atlantic off the coast of Chatham Tuesday. This may sound frightening, but don’t wig out.
State shark expert Greg Skomal told The Boston Globe the two toothy fish are repeat offenders.
“They’re here every year,’’ Skomal said. “We’ve been [tagging them] since 2009.’’
They aren’t the only Great White sharks skirting Massachusetts this year. Skomal told The Globe they are the ninth and 10th tagged by marine fisheries in 2014.
Sharks are fun to freak out over. That’s why “Shark Week’’ exists. But having an actual fear of being a shark’s dinner is largely irrational, as reported by Skomal and Simon Thorrold, a shark researcher at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. There have only been two recorded Massachusetts shark attacks since 1936.
You are more likely to die driving to go buy an ice cream cone or in an altercation with a deer.
