Boston City Council President Decides City Councillors Are Overdue for a Big Raise

Boston City Council President Bill Linehan calls his 24 percent proposed raise a “moderate increase.’’ Jonathan Wiggs/The Boston Globe

When most workers want a raise, he or she has to ask the boss and prepare for the worst. Not Boston City Council President Bill Linehan — he just has to convince his fellow councillors that they all deserve a salary bump.

Linehan told The Boston Globe on Thursday that he will propose a 24 percent raise for himself and the rest of Boston’s city councillors, which he described as a “moderate increase.’’ The proposal would bump each councillor’s annual salary from $87,500 to $108,500. It would be their first raise since 2007.

“It’s an awful position to be put in, to go out and suggest that this is what you’re worth, and then articulate it and vote on it yourself,’’ Linehan said.

Sounds terrible.

The proposal will be filed on Monday, Linehan told The Globe, and will be taken up by the council on Wednesday. It needs to be approved by the councillors and signed by Mayor Marty Walsh to go into effect.
