Residential Alarm and Sprinkler Report Criticized by Fire Officials

Fire officials met with members of the Board of Building Regulations and Standards on Tuesday to resist a new document which looked at the cost and effectiveness of fire alarm and sprinkler units in residential buildings, according to The Boston Globe.

The Globe reported:

“Opponents said the paper singled out fire alarms and sprinklers as contributors to the high cost of housing in Massachusetts without providing evidence to support that conclusion or taking into account the ability of sprinklers to save lives.’’

“I know sprinklers can save lives,’’ Alexander MacLeod, a member of the Board of Building Regulations and Standards told The Globe, “but I’d like to know what the cost is.’’

40 fire officials attended the meeting and voiced their concern over the paper.
