Haverhill Man Accused of Setting Off Homemade Shrapnel Bomb
A 20-year-old Haverhill man was arrested on Friday morning for allegedly placing a homemade bomb filled with shrapnel at a high school stadium on September 2 and then detonating the device.
The explosive set the stadium’s public bathroom on fire. No one was injured, police said.
Matthew Madden was arrested by a mix of Haverhill Police, State Police, and federal agents, and faces multiple felony charges related to the explosive device and arson. He is being held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing, WCVB-TV reports.
A search of Madden’s house and car found evidence of bomb-making materials, police said.
Haverhill police described the explosive as a “Molotov cocktail with shrapnel in it,’’ according to WBZ-TV.
