Oldest Living Mass. Woman Hopes to Be World’s Oldest: ‘There Are Few Ahead…They Have to Die Off’
Bernice Madigan has a lot to be happy about today.
For starters, she can celebrate her 115th birthday knowing that she has successfully secured the spot for oldest living woman in Massachusetts.
According to iBerkshires.com, however, Madigan has bigger ambitions. She hopes to become the oldest person in the world. (Right now, she’s the fourth).
While celebrating this year’s birthday, she told iBerkshires: “Well, there are few ahead … they have to die off.’’
Madigan was born in West Springfield in 1899, and her family moved to Cheshire when she was a child. According to National Geographic, Madigan later moved to Washington D.C., where she lived for 90 years. During that time, she worked for the US Treasury Department.
Currently, Madigan resides in Cheshire with her niece. As if her Guinness Book of World Records-worthy goals weren’t cool enough, Madigan also has a Facebook and Twitter account.
