The Boston Marathon and the events surrounding the race will bring in spending of more than $175 million, according to the Greater Boston Convention & Visitors Bureau.

In excess of 35,000 runners from more than 70 countries are expected to participate in this year’s marathon. The race is also expected to draw more than 1,800 reporters from several hundred outlets.

“The spending impact of the 118th Boston Marathon provides a huge economic benefit for our visitor industry and it kick starts our spring tourism season,’’ said GBCVB President and CEO Patrick Moscaritolo.

The 1996 Boston Marathon – the city’s 100th – brought in more than $172 million. This year’s race is expected to top that previous record.
