State trooper injured as alleged drunk driver hits cruiser protecting highway crew
A woman is facing drunken driving charges after she allegedly rear-ended a State Police cruiser that was positioned to protect workers in a construction zone on the Massachusetts Turnpike in Brighton Monday night, State Police said.
Ann Lyn King, 45, of Worcester faces arraignment today in Boston Municipal Court on five charges, including operating under the influence of liquor and negligent operation in a Turnpike construction zone, State Police said.
Trooper Mark Lombardi was parked alongside a maintenance crew performing light pole inspections on the Pike westbound when his Ford Interceptor sport utility vehicle was struck from behind by King’s Kia Sorrento just before 10:30 p.m., State Police said.
The collison caused King’s car to roll over onto its side and caused heavy damage to the right side of the police SUV, police said.
Following the crash, Lombardi called the State Police barracks in Weston to report the crash and to request an ambulance, State Police said. He was transported to Boston Medical Center with minor injuries.
King was arrested by another responding trooper and charged with multiple driving violations.
Three lanes were closed until 12:30 a.m. today as police investigated the crash. The crash took place just over the Newton line in Brighton, State Police said.
