Globe photographers make a strong showing in Boston Press Photographers Association awards
With images of both terror and joy, Boston Globe photographers took first prize in eight of 13 categories in the Boston Press Photographers Association’s annual Pictures of the Year contest, and captured best of show.
John Tlumacki led the Globe’s winners with his bold coverage of the Boston Marathon bombing. The graphic images were captured over the course of 17 minutes, said Bill Greene, Globe director of photography.
“He saw the first bomb go off and instinctively ran into the smoke,’’ said Greene. “His instincts and compassion were incredible.’’
Tlumacki’s photos took first place in spot news, news picture story, and he was named Photographer of the Year. He also was part of the Globe team entry, which won first place for its coverage of the bombing, and he placed and received honorable mentions in numerous other categories.
Tlumacki won best of show for his iconic photograph of 78-year-old marathon runner Bill Iffrig, who was knocked down by the first bomb at the Marathon finish line.
“It is bittersweet,’’ said Tlumacki of his awards. “The circumstances of the people I photographed are tough. This is not about me. It’s about the victims I captured.’’
Greene took first place in the feature picture story and general news categories.
Globe photographers also won first prizes in the pictorial (David L. Ryan), and video/multimedia categories (Yoon S. Byun), and received numerous other honors.
Tlumacki was also named BPPA’s Photographer of the Year in 2011.
