Schools awarded slice of $1 million grant
The Somerville public schools have been awarded part of a $1 million, two-year grant to improve early childhood education for children and families in prekindergarten programs through third grade, according to the administration of Governor Deval Patrick. The funding is part of a $50 million federal Race to the Top grant won by the Commonwealth last December. The money will help train teachers, align curriculums to broader standards, and improve the relationship between parents and the school systems that teach their children. Four other agencies, in Pittsfield, Springfield, Boston, and the Merrimack Valley, will receive parts of the grant.
