Emerging Technologies and Innovation Center opens at UMass Lowell
The first new academic building to be constructed on the
University of Massachusetts Lowell
campus in more than 30
years is officially open. The 84,000-square-foot Emerging Technologies and Innovation Center, located on the university’s north campus, features classrooms, laboratories, and high-tech clean rooms that will enable it to serve as an educational hub and research facility. Areas of focus within the center will include nanotechnology, molecular biology, plastics engineering, and optics. The $80 million project was funded through a $35 million grant from the Massachusetts Economic Investment Act of 2006, $5 million in federal funds through the UMass Building Authority, and a $10 million grant from the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center, in addition to industry and individual donors.
