Gay marriage advocates rally in Portland, Maine

Gay marriage supporters are ramping up their campaign to legalize same-sex marriage with television advertising, bumper stickers, and yard signs. More than 200 advocates gathered Monday at Portland City Hall to begin the next phase of their effort ahead of the Nov. 6 election, when Mainers will vote on a ballot question on the issue. Mainers United for Marriage follows with a $100,000, weeklong television campaign that begins Tuesday. Gay marriage opponents are also stepping up their efforts. The Roman Catholic Church has kicked off a series of meetings to promote its view that marriage should be only between a man and a woman.
