Flanagan thrilled to be suiting up in OldTime Baseball Game
Sean “Skip’’ Flanagan will be the first deaf player to appear in the Oldtime Baseball Game, which will be played Aug. 13 at St. Peter’s Field in Cambridge.
“My immediate reaction when I got the invitation was one of shock,’’ said Flanagan via e-mail. “I never expected to be part of something this big.’’
The Framingham resident is a pitcher and first baseman heading into his sophomore year at the Rochester Institute of Technology.
The game’s retro uniforms have been a big hit in its 19 years.
“My favorite old-time uniform probably would be the 1940s Red Sox,’’ said the 19-year-old Flanagan. “It looks so classy, with the stirrups and the retro Boston font. I’ve always been a huge Ted Williams fan. I wore his number 9 when I played as a kid.’’
The American Red Cross will benefit from the game’s proceeds.
“It’s nice that a simple game of America’s pastime will help the Red Cross help others,’’ said Flanagan.
As for the Oldtime Game, he said “just being there is going to be awesome. I’m looking forward to speaking the same language as my teammates.’’ The universal language of baseball.LENNY MEGLIOLA
