Dream job alert: Somerville needs a marshmallow fluff party planner
The annual Fluff festival, "What the Fluff? A Tribute to Union Square Invention," is hiring a second-in-command.
If planning a party that involves an inordinate amount of Marshmallow Fluff sounds like your dream job, you’re in luck.
Union Square Main Streets, a nonprofit organization based in Somerville, is looking for someone to help prepare the annual “What the Fluff?” festival, which honors Marshmallow Fluff, one of the city’s most-prized inventions.

Fluff is often used in the popular “Fluffernutter,” a sandwich made with peanut butter and marshmallow fluff usually served on white bread.
The “Fluff Festival Assistant Coordinator” will be responsible for overseeing the operations, logistics, outreach, volunteers and day-of coordination for the Fluff Festival: A Tribute to Union Square Invention, the job listing states. It continues:
As second-in-command for this year’s Festival, you will be able to hone your organizational and communication skills and gain experience in all aspects of event planning and execution, including marketing, fundraising, and promotion. This position affords you the opportunity to showcase your creativity and work with a community and team like no other.
The paid position is part-time and temporary, with a target start date of mid-July through the end of September. The annual festival, which attracts about 12,000 people each year, is set for September 24.
“What the Fluff?” celebrates Union Square resident Archibald Query’s sweet 1917 creation, according to The Boston Globe.
Query created Fluff in his kitchen and sold it door-to-door in Somerville before selling his invention to two shrewd businessmen, H. Allen Durkee and Fred L. Mower in 1920. Lynn-based Durkee-Mower Inc. manufactures Marshmallow Fluff to this day.
