In Boston, it pays (more than usual) to be a doctor
Boston Business Journal just released its list of the 20 best-paying jobs in Boston, with several medical-related careers taking the top five spots.
BBJ compared the salaries of Greater Boston professionals to the same careers elsewhere. The paper scrutinized employment data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and measured it against roughly 800 jobs in over 100 metropolitan areas.
BBJ found medical professionals take home very hefty paychecks, with family and general practitioners, OB/GYNs, anesthesiologists, surgeons, and oral and maxillofacial surgeons all earning salaries over $200,000. These professions earn “significantly more’’ in the Boston area than they do nationally.

Boston’s competitive salaries are not limited to medical professionals. BBJ also found professionals in the real estate and construction trades earn more than their counterparts in the rest of the country.
From Boston Business Journal:
“For example, the average compensation for real estate brokers in the Boston market last year was just over $119,000. Nationally, the average for the profession was $80,400, meaning Boston brokers pulled in almost 50 percent more than their counterparts across the U.S.’’
BBJ also released a report on five of the worst-paying jobs in the Boston-area, and a separate list ranked the 15 best-paying jobs in the tech sector.
