Mass General Brigham will eliminate many management and administrative positions within its hospital network, possibly laying off hundreds of employees, officials said Monday.
The layoffs are due to an anticipated budget shortfall of $250 million over the next two years that the hospital is attempting to close, said Jennifer Street, senior vice president of communications at MGB, in a statement.
“We are also facing the same unrelenting pressures affecting many health care systems across the country,” Street said. “We are acting now to allow us to continue with planned and future investments.”
The healthcare system has more than 82,000 employees, according to a press release. Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s are among the top seven largest employers in the state, according to the Department of Economic Research.
MGB did not specify how many positions would be eliminated, and said that individual leaders are working to identify options.
An email sent to employees Monday morning from President and CEO Anne Klibanski noted that leaders across departments reached the decision together after evaluating “the current healthcare landscape and our poor financial performance over the past several years.”
“If we do not take definitive action now to stabilize our financial health, we compromise our ability to continue to invest in our mission,” Klibanski wrote.
Street said in the statement that MGB will provide market competitive severance packages and benefits coverage to affected employees.
“The steps we are taking now to evolve our organization will play a critical role in ensuring that Mass General Brigham continues to lead, innovate, and transform the future of healthcare for the benefit of everyone,” Street said in the statement.
