‘His stars were aligned’: Parishioners, first responders save man who suffered heart attack during Sunday Mass

The 75-year-old's brother said when he collapsed at St. Mary's in Wrentham Sunday morning, a nurse sitting in the pew behind him immediately began CPR.

Though he suffered a heart attack during Sunday morning Mass, the family of a 75-year-old man said he was blessed to have been where he was when it happened.

The man’s brother told Boston.com the 75-year-old collapsed at St. Mary’s in Wrentham, but there was a nurse sitting in the pew behind him who immediately began CPR. On top of that, the church is just across the street from the fire and police departments. First responders were quick to arrive.

A Facebook post from Wrentham’s chief of police said officers took over CPR when they arrived and the fire department offered “advanced life support” and successfully resuscitated the man before taking him to the hospital.

“All of his stars were aligned,” said the man’s brother, who asked that Boston.com not publish their names. “You never want something like that to happen, but if it does, he was in the right place at the right time.”

He said the priest who was giving Mass when his brother collapsed even went to Norwood Hospital afterward to check up on him, but the 75-year-old had already been transferred to Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

The man is still in the cardiac intensive care unit, according to his brother, but his family said the care there has been wonderful.

They said they wanted to thank all of the first responders and hospital staff who have been so helpful throughout this stressful time.

His brother called the victim a well-loved uncle and St. Mary’s parishioner.
