Tuberculosis case identified at Brookline day care

Public health officials have identified a case of tuberculosis at Tiny World Child Care, a day care center in Brookline.

The state Department of Public Health notified and offered testing to individuals who may have been exposed. Health officials will follow up on any positive test results to prevent additional spread of the disease, the state said.

“DPH is monitoring the situation, and working closely with local officials and the Tiny World Child Care community,” the department said in a statement. “Tuberculosis is preventable and treatable, and transmission of TB in these cases is very uncommon.”

Tuberculosis is caused by a bacteria that usually attacks the lungs, though it can also affect any part of the body including the brain, kidney, and spine, according to the CDC.

State officials did not specify whether it was a staff member, parent, or child who was diagnosed with infection. Tiny World Child Care did not immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday morning.
