edX blends remote learning and on-site instruction with community college partnerships
A million dollar grant is helping bring Harvard and MIT courses to Bunker Hill and MassBay community colleges, blending e-learning with on-site instructors in a bid to boost the state’s computer science expertise.
The program, which was announced today, expands the popular edX program, a non-profit established by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard to to build out a new model of online education.
It’s not the first school partnership for the program, which has primarily focused on online coursework, but it is a new direction for edX in that on-site instructors will help students at Bunker Hill and MassBay with one-on-one, in-person mentoring.
Paul Reville, the state’s education secretary, told the Globe’s Peter Schworm that the program, funded by a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will take the best from both the online and traditional learning worlds.
“This is a pioneering experiment that opens up new learning opportunities for students,’’ he said.
