It’s official: Mass. native Chris Evans is back as Cap
The Sudbury-raised actor’s surprise return was revealed in an in-theater-only teaser ahead of “Avatar: Fire and Ash.”
Massachusetts native Chris Evans is officially returning as Captain America in the upcoming Marvel film “Avengers: Doomsday,” set to hit theaters next December.
Evans’ reprisal as Steve Rogers was confirmed Thursday in an in-theater-only teaser shown ahead of “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” which opened this week, according to Entertainment Weekly.
The brief clip reportedly shows Steve park his motorcycle in front of his home, head inside, and pick up his new baby as the camera pans around to reveal Evans’ face. It ends with a countdown to the movie’s debut next year.
The Boston-born and Sudbury-raised actor began his Captain America run in 2011 with the film “Captain America: The First Avenger.” His return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe may come as a surprise to fans, as Evans appeared to retire the character at the end of “Avengers: Endgame” in 2019.

In a January interview with Esquire, Evans was adamant that he was done with the role of Steve Rogers and that Cap was “happily retired.”
Evans isn’t the only Marvel star making a comeback. Robert Downey Jr. is also set to appear in the film — not as Tony Stark, but as the villain Doctor Doom.
“Avengers: Doomsday” is set to hit theaters on Dec. 18, 2026.
