After two powerful performances, Berklee College of Music student Grace Kinstler, 20, came in third place after she was eliminated from American Idol.
An Illinois native and Berklee songwriting major, Kinstler dazzled week after week with her strong voice and vulnerable deliveries. At her Idol audition, she even made Luke Bryan cry, and at the finale entertained comparisons to Kelly Clarkson.
For her final performances, she sang “All By Myself” by Celine Dion and “I Have Nothing” by Whitney Houston, and even joined Chaka Khan for a medley of “I’m Every Woman” and “Ain’t Nobody.”
Though the judges praised her for her power and vulnerability, she and finalist Willie Chance lost out to contestant Chayce Beckham.
After her performance of “All By Myself” Lionel Richie told Kinstler, “Only you can create another song out of a standard song.”
