Massachusetts students have nation’s top ACT scores

Massachusetts high school students graduating in 2016 had the highest average score on the ACTs  in the nation, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DOE) said in a statement Wednesday.Students who took the exam had an average composite score of 24.8 out of a possible 36, according to the DOE. The national average was 20.8.The ACT measures college and career readiness using four benchmarks: English, math, reading, and science. State officials said 53 percent of Mass. graduates met all four benchmarks, compared to 26 percent nationally. The DOE said that a growing number of seniors are choosing the ACT over the SAT. This year in Massachusetts, around 20,300 public and private school students, or 28 percent of the class of 2016, took the ACT, according to the statement.“We are proud to see that once again, Massachusetts students had the highest ACT scores in the nation,” said Governor Charlie Baker. “I congratulate those students, their teachers and their families on their hard work.”Higher percentages of the state’s largest racial and ethnic groups also met all four benchmarks compared to last year, the DOE said.
