Suffolk University’s Margaret McKenna is no longer president

Margaret McKenna is out at Suffolk University earlier than expected.

Trustee Chairman Robert Lamb announced Thursday, following an emergency meeting discussing the results of an investigation into allegations of McKenna’s excessive spending and hostile demeanor, she is no longer the university’s president, according to The Boston Globe.

McKenna shared in a statement to the Globe that she thinks she was unfairly terminated.

“I fought a good fight against entrenched interests and a board that did not understand university governance,” McKenna said. “ … I have been disheartened by the violations of basic process and the negative impact on the truly outstanding Suffolk University academic community.”

Originally McKenna was expected to step down from her role by the fall of 2017, after she made a deal with the board. Provost Marisa Kelly will take over as interim president, according to a Facebook post from the Board of Trustees.

The university launched an investigation into McKenna after the school’s former PR executive, George Regan, threatened to sue the school when his contract was terminated. Regan released a statement Thursday saying he believed the Board of Trustees showed “great courage by standing up and recognizing the tremendous mistake that they made by hiring Margaret McKenna.”

“I love Suffolk and that is why we sent the letter that launched the investigation into her bad behavior and in turn resulted in today’s actions,” he said in the statement. “Today marks a great day for Suffolk University as it turns the page on a very bad chapter and looks for new leadership.”
