BOSTON (AP) — A former University of Massachusetts-Lowell student has filed a $1 million lawsuit against the university claiming he was unfairly expelled after he was charged with kidnapping his former girlfriend.

The Sun of Lowell reports that 27-year-old Fabrice Kamayou says in the federal lawsuit that his efforts to earn a graduate degree from other schools were thwarted because of his expulsion. He says UMass officials tried to “purposefully destroy his life,” and wrote on his record that he withdrew from the university due to a disciplinary action.

The university in court documents denied the allegations.

Kamayou was charged in 2013 with domestic assault, kidnapping, and battery in connection for allegedly assaulting his former girlfriend. The Fitchburg man pleaded guilty to assault and battery in June 2015.
