Elizabeth Warren quotes Taylor Swift at Bridgewater State graduation

Warren described the pop star as, “one of the great philosophers of our time.”

Sen. Elizabeth Warren

Senator Elizabeth Warren had three pieces of advice for Bridgewater State University’s Class of 2016.

First, expect the unexpected.

“Don’t be so focused in your plans that you are unwilling to consider the unexpected,” she said.

Second, she urged the graduates to make time to discover who they are.

“If you figure that out, nothing will be more valuable,” she said.

Third, she told the students to fight for what they want despite the naysayers. To help illustrate this point, Warren quoted “one of the great philosophers of our time”—Taylor Swift.

“Haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate,” Warren sang.

She then mentioned another pop star.

“Knowing who you are, helps you shake it off,” she said. “I promised I wasn’t going to sing, and I definitely can’t dance like Britney Spears.”

The graduates in the crowd didn’t seem to mind the burst of song. As Warren took her seat following her address, one person could be heard yelling, “Killed it!”

You can watch the full speech here, with Warren’s remarks starting around 1:33:20.
