UMass Boston will offer on-campus housing in 2018
The University of Massachusetts Boston will open a dorm on its Columbia Point campus in Dorchester for the first time in September 2018, university officials said Thursday.
The project will be a public-private partnership with the city, according to a release from the university. The $120 million housing complex is expected to contain 1,000 beds to accommodate freshmen and transfer students when the building opens in September of 2018.
Capstone Development will construct the facility, which will be owned and operated by a nonprofit management entity. UMass Boston, which has been historically a commuter school, will oversee the student life at the facility next to the Clark Athletic Center.
“This is a major milestone in the history of UMass Boston and a significant accomplishment for the university as a whole,’’ university president Marty Meehan said. “UMass Boston is the most diverse campus of its size in New England, and we know there is a direct connection between on-campus housing and academic success. We therefore believe it is crucial to provide our Boston students with the opportunities that students at most colleges and universities take for granted.’’
