National site launches featuring list of college demands
A website called thedemands.org launched Thursday to highlight the lists of demands college students have given to their university administrators to address racism on campuses nationwide.
Three schools from Massachusetts — Amherst College, Boston College, and Simmons College — were among the 37 listed on the site.
The site also features a map that displays national demands from protestors around the country in response to the 2014 shooting death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. When users click on Massachusetts, they see a list of demands originating from Boston, which includes “jail killer cops,’’ “a living wage,’’ and “end mass incarceration.’’
The website is managed by Johnetta Elzie, DeRay McKesson, Brittany Packnett and Sam Sinyangwe, all of whom have been vocal advocates and organizers for racial equality, especially after Ferguson.
The organizers said they’ll continue to update the website as more schools submit demands.
