Federal Investigators Drop Most Sexual Cases Against Colleges

Federal investigators have dropped nearly three-quarters of allegations against colleges accused of mishandling campus sexual violence complaints over the past decade, according to data from the U.S. Education Department’s Office for Civil Rights obtained by The Boston Globe.

Often the cases are dropped because they were filed too late.

Over a 10-year-period, 87 out of 118 investigations were closed due to late filing, administrative reasons, or because the allegations could not be proven, the Globe reported.

Meanwhile the number of new sexual violence-related investigations has increased steadily over the past 10 years, from one case in 2004 to 102 cases last year.
