State university celebrates 150th anniversary

FARMINGTON, Maine — The University of Maine at Farmington, the state’s first public institution of higher education, kicks off a yearlong celebration this week, marking its 150th anniversary. The festivities begin Wednesday with a commemoration in observance of the 1863 signing of the university’s charter by the Legislature. The school was known as Western State Normal School when it opened. At Wednesday’s Charter Day event, university president Kathryn Foster will be joined by Governor Paul LePage. A campus and community picnic at the Emery Community Arts Center will follow and later that day, the class of 2014 will bury a time capsule at the site of the original school. The university will continue celebrating its sesquicentennial with events throughout the 2013-2014 academic year.
