A Chelsea teen is facing a murder charge after he and a group of men allegedly chased another man down and stabbed him to death.
Sergio Josue Castellanos Cerrato, 18, was allegedly part of a group that attacked Eduardo Alfredo Rosales Lopez, 25, of Chelsea, according to MassLive. Castellanos Cerrato was arraigned March 20 in Chelsea District Court and pleaded not guilty.
Just before 7 p.m. on March 19, Chelsea police responded to a call about a stabbing near Chestnut Street and Everett Avenue. When officers arrived, they located “multiple stabbing victims,” police said in a statement.
The victims were given medical aid and taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, according to police. One of them, later identified as Lopez, suffered life-threatening wounds and died from his injuries at the hospital.
Video footage captured on city cameras showed Lopez and another man walking near Everett Avenue before interacting with Castellanos Cerrato and four other men, MassLive reported. After this interaction, the group can be seen chasing Lopez and the other man down the street before the two of them split up.
As Lopez ran down Everett, he dropped his backpack, and one of the men from the group picked it up, as seen in the video footage. The men then caught up to Lopez, and a fight ensued between him, Castellanos Cerrato, and another man in the group, according to officials.
The fight lasted about 15 seconds, and during that time, Castellanos Cerrato can allegedly be seen repeatedly stabbing Lopez, who fell to the ground, according to MassLive. The group then fled the scene, and Lopez began walking away, leaving a trail of blood behind him, according to officials.
Shortly after Chelsea police found Lopez, they tracked down Castellanos Cerrato and three of the other four men in the group, MassLive reported. Castellanos Cerrato had a cut on his leg and was taken to the hospital, while the three other men were taken to the Chelsea Police Department for questioning.
Castellanos Cerrato had changed out of the clothing he was wearing during the alleged stabbing by the time police got to him, but they discovered his blood-stained clothing on the ground nearby, according to MassLive. They also found a blood-stained knife, a black machete, and Lopez’s backpack, according to officials.
Castellanos Cerrato has been held without bail and is due back in court April 21, MassLive reported. No other information about the other suspects or a potential motive has been released at this time.
Chelsea police have asked anyone with information about this incident to contact them at 617-466-4800, use their tip line at 617-466-4880, or use their anonymous tip line via their website and social media accounts.
